How to Write a Romance Novel

Posted by: italianwriter on: June 22, 2009

If you are interested in writing a romance novel, the best way to learn to write one, is to read the type of romance novel you enjoy reading.   The secret of writing a romance novel is read in the genre you are interested in writing in.    You can learn a lot from the author who is published in the genre you want to write in.  No professional writing works from a workbook. They read and read and read some more.

What you need to write a romance novel:  heroine and hero, and secondary characters that are important to your story,  a good character chart, creating a setting, a conflict that is internal and external. Focus only on the characters, not the plot. Because, it’s the characters that leave a long and lasting impression on us, it’s the characters we sympathize with, we relate to, not the plot.  Spend more time developing your characters so you know them so well.

DEVELOPING CHARACTERS FOR YOUR FICTION

Posted by: italianwriter on: April 20, 2009

When you are creating characters for your novel or short story, create your own character chart by finding out what you want to know about your characters. I have learned over the years that nothing in these characters charts have anything to do with what my story is about or what I want to know about my characters. So, I decided to create my own characters and get to know them by what I want to ask them myself.   Characters cannot be created fast.  They get real a little at a time.  Write down in a list what you want to know about the characters in your novel or short story.  Only you know what you want to know about your hero and heroine.  There is also a chart called the GMC Chart. This chart has internal and external goal, motivation and conflict, and it is also a great way to learn about your hero and heroine. It is also helpful in creating a synopsis.   Whatever works for you, do it.   When I say, to create your own character chart, I mean to create your characters according to what you want to know about your characters.  Always remember, that characters are motivation and without that, your characters won’t breathe.  For example: If you write that your main character yearns for love.  Ask why she wants that.   Why is that important to her?  When you are dealing with creation of your hero and heroine, always ask why?   If your  heroine’s profession is to become a special education teacher. Then ask why?  Why did she want to become a special education teacher. By knowing why, we can pretty much understand her reason why she pursued that career. Plus, it gives your character life.  Without motivation, you have nothing but worthless detail.  Characters come to life by giving them believable goals and motivation.  Without that, you will always struggle with your characters.  I learned the hard way. I used character charts after character charts and still I didn’t know these people in my story. Then, I read an article about motivation, which made me stop and think about my characters and when I returned to the charts. I realized that the details was just boring detail, but nothing deepened it with motivation.   Now, when I create characters. I am ready to ask why questions about him?  About his profession?  About his marital status, and so on. Fictional people are nothing but motivation.  The next time you work on your character charts for your hero and heroine, ask why?  If my hero is single. I start asking why?   If my hero is a veterinarian. I ask why?   Another words, characters need to speak, and that is when motivation steps in.   Get it?
